CBE STAFF ENCOURAGED BY CORNERSTONE SPEAKERS AND ATTENDEES

By Megan Greulich

CBE staff recently returned from Cornerstone ’07, where we hosted a tent with JPUSA (Jesus People USA) for the sixth year in a row. We traveled to the dusty fields of southern Illinois to distribute resources and facilitate lectures and dialogue—ready to serve any of the 10,000 Cornerstone attendees who decided to show up at our tent. Yet, the overwhelming response from CBE staff members was that we were the ones who were encouraged and refreshed!

It was exciting to see very little, if any, opposition to the message of biblical equality by the intelligent, thoughtful, and kind people who visited the tent. Those who came ranged from early high school students to married couples to our supportive friends from JPUSA. Women came to find a “safe place” where they did not have to defend their calling to leadership. Parents brought their teenagers to be introduced to our ministry. Husbands came to learn how to better support their wives. Single women came to be affirmed in their call to ministry regardless of their marital status. And young people came with open minds and questions about theology and church history. They engaged in issues like equality and the Trinity, Wicca, justice, violence against women, eating disorders, dating, Celtic worship, marriage and sexuality, modesty, gender roles, the theology of Paul, the biblical basis for mutuality in marriage, and the history of women’s service in the church.

After each lecture, CBE staff were encouraged by dialogue with attendees, which we were able to continue as several individuals joined us for lunch and supper. What was more, we were encouraged by the interest in the resources we brought from our bookstore, Equality Depot. Within the first day, we had sold out of several titles and began taking orders. Our friends at the CBE tent seemed genuinely interested in learning about and engaging in our ministry.

We left Cornerstone, reflecting on the privilege it was to meet and encourage such wonderful people of God and to interact with such passionate Christians from JPUSA. We thanked God for the evidence that the Holy Spirit is indeed moving in the church to bring about equality for women and men. And we sadly admitted that we will have to wait an entire year to go back!
