A CRITICAL LOOK AT WILD AT HEART AND CAPTIVATING
Unveiling the Mystique of Gender Essentialism

Recording by Julia Butcher

The books Wild at Heart by John Eldredge and Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge have become run away best-sellers in Christian bookstores. In Captivating, the authors propose that "Every little girl has dreams of being rescued by her hero, of being swept away into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess." What makes books like these so appealing? Is their attractiveness scriptural or cultural?

The "Captivating" workshop Christians for Biblical Equality offered at Cornerstone Music Festival overflowed with people who were eager to hear a Christian egalitarian perspective on these popular books. CBE staff member, Julia Butcher, critiqued their emphasis on romance, roles, and outer beauty which do not begin to scratch the surface of the abundant life available to men and women in Christ. She shares her own experiences with these books as well as critically examines them in the light of gender essentialism, scripture use, and cultural influences.

EVE'S REVENGE
Women and a Spirituality of the Body

Lilian Calles Barger

Barger provides an increased understanding of how woman's relationship with the body and its social meaning impacts spirituality. She investigates the tension women experience between their bodies and their desire for a spiritual life. This thoughtful, grounded perspective reminds us that God is the "Word made flesh," valuing physical existence enough to redeem it by becoming human in Jesus. Brazos 2003, 224 pages.

GROWING STRONG DAUGHTERS
Encouraging Girls to Become All They're Meant to Be

Lisa Graham McMinn

This provocative book offers insight into how parents can help their daughters develop confidence, a balanced self-image, and the ability to think and speak for themselves. McMinn bases her practical advice on the teachings of Scripture that women are image-bearers of the Lord and co-stewards over God's creation. Baker Book House, 239 pages.

MIRROR, MIRROR
Reflections on Who You Are and Who You'll Become

Kara Powell and Kendall Payne

This book helps explain where body-image problems come from. It then gives girls a healthy biblical perspective on physical appearance, concluding that the only real way for girls to experience lasting acceptance of their bodies is to look at how God has created them and how he intends for them to love others and themselves. Includes a section on leadership and leadership qualities. Zondervan, 144 pages.

REDEEMING EVE
Finding Hope Beyond the Struggles of Life

Heather P. Webb

Rather than denying the power of their own voices, Webb encourages women to use their voices to bring about healing in themselves and others. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of women's lives, including encountering men, relating with other women, and body image. Study questions at the end of each chapter encourage thoughtful self-examination. Baker Book House, 185 pages.

TEMPTATIONS WOMEN FACE
Honest Talk About Jealousy, Anger, Sex, Money, Food, Pride

Mary Ellen Ashcroft

The author maintains that we should look honestly at our temptations and ask what they tell us about ourselves and our lives. She believes God's intention is not simply that we flee temptation, but that we be fully redeemed, and learn to be real with self, others and God. InterVarsity Press, 213 pages.

WANTING TO BE HER
Body Image Secrets Victoria Won't Tell You

Michelle Graham

Michelle Graham reveals how we have fallen into the trap of viewing our bodies through the lens of the culture rather than through the eyes of God. She helps us understand that these are not the things that God wants us to dwell on, nor are they the true qualities of beauty. As you read this book you will discover the true secrets of a positive body image.

"Though the subject of beauty and body and ethnicity and weight might leave a woman feeling self-conscious, after reading this book, I felt unusually relaxed. My longing for God was reawakened, and my love for other women renewed." -- Dr. Sarah Sumner, Professor of Ministry and Theology at Azuza Pacific University, and author of Men and Women in the Church
